Collection: Fruit Trees
Premium fruit trees 6 to 10 feet tall.
Choosing the Right Tree: Select fruit tree varieties that are well-suited to your local climate. All of our fruit trees are hardy for growing zones in Gogebic County. Space and Size: Consider the mature size of the tree and ensure you have enough space for it to grow. Dwarf or semi-dwarf varieties are suitable for smaller spaces. Pollination Requirements: Some fruit trees require cross-pollination from another tree of the same species to produce fruit. Ensure you have compatible varieties if needed. Site Selection: - Sunlight: Most fruit trees require full sun, which means at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Soil Quality: Well-draining soil is crucial. Conduct a soil test to determine pH and nutrient levels and amend the soil as necessary. Water Access: Ensure the site has adequate water access, either through natural rainfall or irrigation.
Planting Process: - Timing: The best time to plant fruit trees is during their dormant season, typically in late winter or early spring. - Digging the Hole: Dig a hole that is twice as wide and as deep as the root ball of the tree. This allows the roots to spread easily. - Planting the Tree: Place the tree in the hole, ensuring that the graft union (the point where the tree was grafted onto the rootstock) is above the soil line. Backfill with soil, gently tamping it down to remove air pockets. - Watering: Water the tree thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil and establish the roots.
Care and Maintenance: - Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and suppress weeds but keep it away from the trunk to prevent rot. - Pruning: Regular pruning is essential to maintain the tree's shape, remove dead or diseased wood, and encourage fruit production. - Fertilization: Fertilize the tree according to its specific needs, usually in early spring and again in late summer.
Pest and Disease Management: - Monitor the tree regularly for signs of pests or diseases. Use organic or chemical treatments as necessary, following guidelines for safe application.
