Winterberry
Winterberry
Ilex verticillata
Please note we do not sex our Winterberry Holly, as that must occur when the plants are in flower. These are sold in a pack of 25, and as we order from a reputable nursery, we feel there should be enough males within the pack selected by the nursery to ensure pollination provided that they are all planted within a 100-200 foot area.
Appearance: Winterberry holly is a shrub that typically grows between 3 and 12 feet tall. Its dark green leaves turn yellow before falling off in the autumn. The plant is dioecious, meaning there are separate male and female plants. Only the female plants produce berries, requiring a male plant nearby for pollination.
Habitat: This plant is commonly found in wetlands, streams, and damp thickets. It is adaptable to various soil types but prefers acidic, moist, and well-drained soils. Winterberry holly is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 9.
Uses: Winterberry holly is often used in landscaping for its ornamental value, especially in winter gardens. The bright red berries are visually appealing and attract birds and other wildlife. The branches with berries are also popular in floral arrangements and holiday decorations.
Care: They thrive in full sun to partial shade and require regular watering, especially during dry spells.
